NYPD prepared for crop dusting-style attack

The NYPD has the air defense capability to take down a small aircraft that threatens the city.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly recently confirmed that the city is prepared for an attack by air, but did not give additional details.

"Al-Qaeda was talking about targeting the West using crop dusters,” a source in the NYPD said, NYDailyNews.com reports. “There was a specific concern about using this type of aerial spraying of anthrax and some other biological chemicals. That also led to plans to equip our aircraft.

"It's not surface to air missiles or a weapon that has rockets. What was envisioned was a small aircraft...coming down the Hudson."

The source confirmed that the city possesses 119 helicopters, some armed with .50 caliber semiautomatic rifles that are capable of incapacitating or destroying moving boats, tractor-trailers or small planes.

"The New York City Police Department has lots of capabilities that you don't know about and won't know about," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, according to NYDailyNews.com.

Officials from the U.S. military and federal government have refused to comment on whether or not the NYPD actually has the authority to take down flying aircraft, but Representative Pete King (R-New York) said that the NYPD has what is absolutely essential.
