John Bolton warns of bioterror

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and possible 2012 GOP presidential candidate John Bolton has expressed his belief that all defense spending should be protected from potential budget cuts that may occur with a GOP leadership of congress.

"I think you've got to be just as much on the outlook for waste and fraud in defense spending as anywhere else, but the fact is we're entering a very uncertain period in the world," Bolton said, according to the Huffington Post. "We've got a lot of threats out there that we're not ready for. Not just nuclear proliferation, but chemical and biological weapons."

Bolton made the statements on Fox Business and explained many threats that he believed pertinent to national defense.

"This is not the time to cut back," Bolton said, according to the Huffington Post. "I understand there's a lot of pressure to get deficits down. I'm all in favor of it. But national security comes first, pure and simple, as far as I'm concerned."

In the last month, several conservatives, including GOP senators Tom Coburn and Rand Paul, have stated that defense spending should be looked at as an area to cut spending. GOP members that share Bolton's opinion on the matter include GOP senator John McCain and possible 2012 GOP presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
