Bruker Detection to supply navy with chemical detection system

Under an initial Department of Defense contract worth more than $1 million, Bruker Detection Corporation has begun supplying the U.S. Navy with chemical detection systems.

The award, granted by the DOD’s Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense, calls for 10 systems to be initially supplied for the Improved Point Detection System – LifeCycle Replacement Program. An additional 200 systems are then to be supplied over a period of five years, according to UPI.

The IPDSL-RP is based predominantly on Bruker’s RAID–S2 system, which is a wall-mounted trace amounts gas detector that is utilized for the detection of chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals.

RAID–S2 is programmed for the long-term detection of toxic vapors in the ambient air, particularly in the exteriors or interiors of ships, buildings or shelters, UPI reports. It fully utilizes Bruker’s proprietary ion mobility technology.

Before the contract was awarded, the system had to be approved following Production Verification Testing and a Follow-on Operational Test and Evaluation.

"The IPDS-LR and FOT&E consisted of an exceptionally challenging test regime under demanding naval environments that included qualifications for extreme shock, vibration, environmental and analytical requirements," Frank Thibodeau, vice president of Bruker Detection, said, according to UPI. "The Bruker IPDS-LR performed very well in these performance evaluations that collected over 15,000 hours of shipboard operating time."
