Australian biotech firm to open in South Carolina

Alexium Inc. has announced that it will be bringing a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing plant to Greer, South Carolina, that will create 200 jobs over the next five years.

Alexium owns the global rights to Reactive Surface Technology, which was developed with the U.S. Department of Defense. The technology is used to treat the clothing of soldiers to protect them from chemical and biological attack.

Officials with Alexium, an Australian-based biotechnology firm, told it intends to invest $8 million in the new plant, which will also double as a research and development facility.

“We are pleased to locate our new facility in the South Carolina Upstate,” Alexium director Stefan Susta told “The area offers us an excellent business environment and strong work force, as well as exceptional market access.”

Susta said the company has already begun hiring and is currently seeking chemical and materials engineers. The company will also eventually add employees with experience in textiles.

“We're pleased to welcome Alexium to Greer,” Wryley Bettis, chairman of the Greer Development Corp, told “As an innovative organization with global opportunities in multiple industries, the company will be a prized member of our local and South Carolina business communities.”

Alexium will also be working with 16 South Carolina technical colleges that will offer specialized training for the new business.
