New Motorola radio offers first-responders an edge

Motorola Solutions revealed a new portable radio enabled with Wi-Fi connectivity on Thursday at the International Wireless Communication Expo in Las Vegas.

The APX 8000 features noise suppression of background, depending on the user's environment, so that the clearest audio can be attained. The system fits emergency management and law enforcement applications with the ease to which it can connect to agencies and neighboring communities that use the system, Motorola said.

The radio features an adaptive audio engine that will optimize speech, but it also allows radio operators and programmers to tweak the system to meet their needs with full customization capability.

Beverly Hills Police Department Special Projects Officer Ron Derderian expresses what the all-band-capable radio from Motorola allows police forces to accomplish.

“In Beverly Hills, first-responders from different agencies are currently operating on every public safety frequency band available since we do not have a common radio system," Derderian said. "An all-band radio means that we will have enhanced inter-operability and mutual aid capabilities. We can now eliminate cross-band patches and give our officers a single, compact radio that’s easy to use and carry – keeping officers on patrol instead of incurring downtime at the radio shop.”

The device features an aluminum alloy exterior that prevents water and shock damage to electrical components within.
