ECAC approves Smiths Detection portable explosives detector
The portable device allows for an efficient screening process to prevent explosives from being brought aboard a commercial or passenger flight. The device utilizes non-radioactive Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS), which bypasses requirements of handling and disposal. The device itself weighs 23 pounds and is battery powered so it can be operated while in motion.
“This is a major milestone for the IONSCAN 600, so soon after its launch," Smiths Detection Vice President Barrie Foley said. "ECAC approval provides reassurance to our EU customers and beyond that the IONSCAN 600 meets the rigorous EU standard for both passenger and cargo checkpoint screening.”
This device is the first of its kind developed by a company in the U.K. to pass the rigorous testing protocol set by the ECAC. The conference handles approval and sets standards for security equipment for the entire European Union.
The company focuses on detection and security technology in both military and civil markets for use against chemical and biological agents, narcotics, weapons and other contraband.
