Smiths to supply Heathrow Airport with baggage scanners

Smiths Detection said on Tuesday that it has been awarded a contract to supply London's Heathrow Airport with baggage scanners.

The company's HI-SCAN 10080 XCT system allows for the expedient inspection of luggage to enhance security by detecting any explosives or other dangerous materials. Smiths said the system can scan 1,800 luggage containers per hour.

The contract stipulates that 17 of these units will be installed at the airport beginning this summer.

“The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is an ideal, cost-effective way to enhance security for all hold baggage, and we are delighted that one of the world’s major airports agrees," Smiths President Richard Ingram said. "The systems are now operating successfully in airports in South America and continental Europe. Smiths Detection already provides all of Heathrow’s terminals with X-ray screening and Trace detection systems for hand luggage, and this latest award reinforces our close partnership.”

This system has been certified by the European Civil Aviation Conference and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration. The company said the installation will make Heathrow one of the first airports in the U.K. that has adapted to updated regulations in aviation and travel.

Smiths Detection, a subsidiary of Smiths Group, specializes in hazard detection and other security solutions in civil and military applications.
