Jeh Johnson, Secretary of Homeland Security, will participate in the White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, along with other senior department members, will join Johnson at the summit, said the department's press secretary, Marsha Catron. The CVE plans to highlight efforts to prevent violent extremism on a domestic and international level.

Mayorkas is scheduled to give opening remarks and introduce Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday at the summit's leadership forum. The CVE will also highlight some of the work DHS has been doing with three partnering cities to develop prevention and intervention frameworks.

On Wednesday, Johnson will present the opening remarks. He is expected to talk about the department's work with state and local law enforcement, with a particular focus on how to prevent, react to and counter violent extremism.

“Secretary Johnson will highlight his recent engagements with local communities around the country to promote and enable these efforts, while building partnerships between community organizations and officials,” Catron said.

Other members of DHS leadership will participate in various workshops throughout the summit, with a plan to display the department's efforts against violent extremism, Catron said.

She added that the threat of violent extremism extends across international borders, and that DHS is working with communities, state, local, federal and international entities both to better understand the threats and support the local community.
