Fernando Fernandez, former director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), will be one of the speakers for the first Defense Innovation and Technology Conference (DITEC) in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, conference organizers said Thursday.

The Feb. 25 conference, the largest in International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) 2015, is expected to attract professionals from around the world in the science, technology and innovation industries.

Fernandez said the conference is a “unique opportunity” for leaders in the defense industry to discuss major global challenges today.

“The addition of DITEC to the program is a clear acknowledgement of the importance of a cooperative approach, including not only governments, but private industry and academia, to developing the military capabilities of tomorrow,” Fernandez said. “This is an area I’m extremely passionate about, and I very much look forward to participating.”

“Harnessing emerging innovations and technologies in the field of defense in a collaborative way” is the main theme of the conference.

Fernandez currently heads up a consulting firm with clients in the defense and civilian research and development sectors. He previously served as the president and chairman of AETC, Inc., an environmental surveillance firm, and Arete Associates, an applied research firm based in Los Angeles.
