A subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a meeting Nov. 19 to discuss medical developments in response to the Ebola outbreak.

Four medical professionals are expected to testify at the hearing, which will start at 10 a.m. in the 2123 Rayburn House Office Building:

  • Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for the National Institutes of Health
  • Dr. Luciana Borio, assistant commissioner of counterterrorism policy for the Food and Drug Administration
  • Rear Admiral Steve Redd, senior adviser for Ebola response for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Dr. Robin Robinson, director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority for the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response
Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response

The four plan to testify that while progress is being made in some countries, the epidemic is still strong elsewhere in West Africa.

Testimony will focus on an FDA request of $6.18 billion in additional funding to support U.S. international and domestic efforts to respond to the Ebola outbreak. The funding is necessary to allow the FDA to continue its efforts to support the investigational medical products to fight the virus and other infectious diseases.

An internal memo from the subcommittee said the Ebola epidemic in West Africa has raised concerns over public health globally. A critical issue when dealing with any epidemic is the availability of medical products for diagnosis, prevention and treatment, the memo said.
